MANILA, Philippines — Law enforcement and anti-narcotics authorities on Monday seized an estimated P20.4 million worth of shabu  (crystal meth) from three individuals in Catbalogan City, Samar, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) reported on Tuesday.

According to the PDEA report, the suspects, identified only as “Noel,” “Paul,” and “Matt,” were arrested with three kilograms of shabu and several drug-using paraphernalia in an operation on Jan. 27 at 4:40 p.m. in Barangay Mahayag.

Police Lt. Joel Camagong of the Samar Provincial Highway Patrol Team told INQUIRER.net in a phone interview on Tuesday that on Jan. 27 at around 4:40 p.m., the suspects were flagged down for an improvised license plate and the driver’s failure to wear a seatbelt.

“Upon approaching, tinanong siya ng isang tao natin na lumapit doon na nag-flag down, napansin niya na yung mga sakay, aligaga, ‘di mapakali,” Camagong said.

(Upon approaching, when one of our personnel who flagged them down went near them, they noticed that the passengers were anxious and restless.

“Paglingon niya sa kabila, yung sa likod ng driver’s side, yung dalawang sakay doon sa likod niya, may nakita siyang hawak-hawak na crystalline sachet in plain view,” he told INQUIRER.net.

(When they looked across the car, behind the driver’s side, to the two passengers behind him, they saw the passengers holding a crystalline sachet in plain view.)

The Japanese Embassy in Manila provided the grant to the Pilipinas Shell Foundation, Inc., which will lead the capacity-building programs for beneficiary farmers.

The discovery prompted the Samar Provincial Highway Patrol Team to call on their drug enforcement and K9 units, which verified the presence of illegal drugs in the car and led to the authorities searching the vehicle, Camagong explained.

He added that according to the suspects, they were en route by car from Las Piñas City, Metro Manila, to Bukidnon province.

“Habang nagta-travel sila, gumagamit sila (referring to drugs),” Camagong maintained.

(While they were traveling, they were using drugs.)

“Noong na-pat down namin sila, bangag, hindi nagsasalita. Kapag kinausap mo, walang reaksyon. Mabagal yung reflex ng katawan nila,” he detailed.

According to Camagongrich 888, the suspects are under the custody of the Catbalogan City Police Station, awaiting complaints for violating provisions of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
